String Theory was merely a concept, a glimpse of what the potential Adidas shoe could become. The idea, the team, the passion--it was all there. What was lacking was the material to bring the product to fruition.
Was it possible to create a four-way stretch from compiling string and melted plastic together? I was determined to figure out the solution. With my textiles background, I combined my knowledge of knits and woven structures to mimic the stretch and durability of the traditionally manufactured material.
Through altering the combination of various yarns by hand, I quickly discovered the enhancements needed to achieve our goal. Scores of sample swatches later, I established particular ways to wrap the string in specific orders. Many of them successfully imitated a standard four-way stretch fabric.
Once the breakthrough was made, my next step was to work closely with the engineers. We collaborated to create the algorithm that would mimic my hand wrapping process on the machine to design for manufacturability.
Upon further development, my swatches (both hand + machine-made) were presented in Herzogenaurach, Germany to boost Project String Theory. Soon afterwards, it was approved to move forward, thus becoming STRUNG.
